Why I Still Prefer My Vinyls Over Digitized Music

The promise of compact discs to deliver “perfect sound forever” and the ease of digital downloading, have brought the convenience of music listening to unprecedented levels. Two clicks, and you’re good to go.
Still,  staring in appreciation at the artwork of that old record jacket, slipping out that 12 inch vinyl from the inner sleeve, and
waiting in anticipation to hear the cartridge kiss the groove of the record are all part of a ceremony that has a certain romance uniquely of its own.

An Analogy:

Fast forward to year 2310 –
Bill Gates VIII, invents Rhoda, a super computer which controls the system for the primary mode of transportation.
I enter a chamber and Rhoda breaks down my body into molecular digital bits and “uploads” these onto my destination chamber, much like Star Trek’s “beam me up Scotty”.

Perfect! No traffic and the hassles of parking. Practically maintenance free without the usual ceremonies of gassing up, oil change, tune up, etc… Dami talagang ceremonya!
Weekday commute is transport Utopia!!!

Sunday morning 8:30am –
I wake up and suddenly have a craving for Burgers and fries at Antonio’s in Tagaytay (yes, it is now a fastfood chain,  serving the best Angus Burgers from freshly cloned cows). I turn on Rhoda and key in the coordinates for Antonio’s. But as I was about to enter the chamber in the garage, I see that old ’87 Benz 124 wagon bequeathed to me by my great, great, grand, uncle. I haven’t driven it in quite a while and think, heck!, why not give this old baby a spin – anyway, traffic is light.
As I walk towards the door, I run my fingers thru the hood. Nice! It still has that newly waxed surface feel. I open the door and that musty smell of old leather invites me to sit on that partially worn out driver’s seat that has conformed to my body. I turn the key to start the engine and Viola!  Still starts in a click! Great!
But then I notice some pilot lights at the dash reminding me to add some water and oil. More ceremonies!
Might as well check the tires too.

Several minutes after, I’m comfortably cruising  the 15 lane South Luzon expressway at 120kph.
Gripping the steering, I have that sudden urge to step on the pedal – 140, 160, 180, 200, 220kph!
I have total control of that machine – adrenalin rush!
But then, I am really in no hurry as I want to appreciate the drive.  So I slow it down back to cruising 120.
Turn off the airconditioning and open that sunroof. The cool breeze that enters the interior invigorates me while I ingest the scenery  I drive by – scenes I have not been able to see for some time now because of my “digital commute” .

I see trees of green…….. red roses too
I see em bloom….. for me and for you
And I think to myself…. what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue….. clouds of white
Bright blessed days….dark sacred nights
And I think to myself …..what a wonderful world.

The colors of a rainbow…..so pretty ..in the sky
Are also on the faces…..of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands…..sayin.. how do you do
They’re really sayin……i love you.

Upon reaching my destination, I grab a quick bite of burgers and fries and head back home.
The drive back was twice more stimulating.

Monday morning 8:40am –
Shit! I just woke up and remembered I have a 9:00am meet in Makati!
Quick shower and grab a Breakfast Pill.
Good thing I have Rhoda to “upload” me to my meet in 1.00958 nano seconds.
I rush to the chamber. But while I wait for the system to boot up, I catch a glimpse of the wagon and remember yesterday’s drive as Rhoda breaks into bits my molecular smile.

—————–

The car may be “dead” .  But when I’m sixty-four, I’d still like to smell that musty leather interior, grip that steering wheel and feel the breeze on my face while performing that antiquated exercise called driving.
Baguio perhaps next weekend ? I heard they newly opened the Spirits Disco IV.

Sometimes, convenience can take a back seat while I sit back, relax and take pleasure in what “old school” can do .
. .  . And do with style.

Oh and by the way, I was able to make it on time for my 9am  Makati meet.
Unfortunately, Rhoda crashed during the upload and mixed up my molecular bits.
I ended up with my ass right smack where my face should be. 🙂
